Prompt #1 (October 6): What is the “truth” of mythology?
Truth is a word that everyone knows what it means but not necessarily how to define it. Basically the truth of mythology is reality. It is how the myths relate to reality. Truths that I have learned are about the nature of humanity and even the creation of the world. As far as the nature of humanity goes, the cultures that created myths knew a lot about humans. They knew how humans acted back then perhaps more than we know today. For example, in “Midas Myth”, the nature of humanity revealed is that humans are greedy. This is true of humans today. Another truth that I have learned is about the creation of the universe. For example, in “Pan Gu and the Creation of the Universe”, it is explained how the world was created. They believed Pan Gu was born out of an egg shell and this shell became the earth. For all we know, this could be true because nobody actually knows how the world came to be. Finally, one personal truth revealed to me was about the culture. The ancient cultures revealed a lot about what they believed. For example, they revealed how they believed some things came to be. These beliefs help us learn about the ancient cultures today.

Prompt #2 (November 6): Truth in Lord of the Flies
A truth brought out in Lord of the Flies by William Golding is that a beast lies within everyone. The book brings out this truth when Simon is carrying the pig head and the fly lands on it and basically says that the beast is in Simon. This is a truth since there is a beast in everyone because nobody is perfect, everyone will do the wrong thing once in a while, and this beast brings out the bad in everyone. First, every person is not perfect. The beast in them can make them evil and not perfect. Next, there is a beast in everyone that makes them do the wrong thing every once in a while. Finally, this beast is the bad in someone because everyone has a little bad in them since nobody is good all the time. In some people, the beast inside them is very large because they are a very bad or evil person. In other people, the beast inside them is very little because they are good and for the most part a good person. Obviously, one truth in Lord of the Flies is that a beast lies in everyone because nobody is perfect and everyone does the wrong thing once a while, bringing out the bad in them whether it's a lot or a little.

Prompt #3 (January 6): Truth in To Kill a Mockingbird
A truth that Harper Lee teaches us in To Kill a Mockingbird is the truth of racism. Back then, black people were not treated fairly just because of their skin color. This is brought out in To Kill a Mockingbird through Tom Robinson's trial and even through the snowman Jem and Scout make. First, the truth of racism is mainly brought out in Tom Robinson's trial. When Mayella was caught by her father tempting a black man she decided to blame Tom Robinson just because he was black and not white. Also, the jury convicts Tom Robinson because he is black even though he is innocent. They usually always trust the word of a white man over the word of a black man. Although this does not seem fair now, back then it was the way of life. The truth of racism is even brought out simply through the snowman Jem and Scout make. One day it snowed and school was cancelled so Jem and Scout decided to make a snowman. However, there wasn't quite enough snow so they used a little dirt to make the snowman. The dirt made it a black snowman. Jem and Scout didn't have a problem with a black snowman but some people did because they were so racist back then. In To Kill a Mockingbird the truth of racism is brought out. This truth is that white men were better and more important than black men. Luckily, now this truth has changed and all men are created equal.

Prompt #4 (March 30): Truth in Great Expectations
In Great Expectations, Dickens uses expectations to enhance the story by giving something for Pip to do in life. The truth of expectations is that they are a vital part to our lives because without them there would be no purpose to life. If you weren't expected to do one thing, then there is no purpose to your life and you could do whatever you wanted. It sounds nice but it would be a boring life if you woke up every single morning without having to do anything. Your expectations could be something as simple as do well in school, in your sport, or simple chores. They could even be as complicated as Pip's. Such as an expectation to become a gentleman or fall in love. Your expectations truthfully give you something to do in life since without them we would be lost and have no purpose.

Prompt #5 (April 3): Truth in Of Mice and Men
The most important theme in Of Mice and Men is the theme of dreams. This theme is important because dreams are what keep you alive. They keep you motivated to do something in life and accomplish them. For example, Lennie had a dream of owning a farm with George and tending the rabbits. He always kept this dream alive, constantly reminding George of it. This dream is what kept him motivated. He kept working on the farm since he thought by the end of the month they could afford it. Although this wasn't the case, his dream to tend the rabbits remained alive which made him happy. The truth of dreams is that they are so important to everyone and we need to have them to remain happy, motived, and have a purpose to live life. Your dreams can be simple, complex, or whatever you want; you just need to have some type of dream because they are so important to your life and are an extremely important theme in Of Mice and Men.
